As I start Bent Creek Advisors and begin the journey to deliver fractional leadership to hopefully many organizations across healthcare, I have pondered what values will guide my decisions along the way. Asking questions like:

  • How will I know I have made a decision that aligns with who I want to be?

  • How will I know the same in terms of the organization I want to be part of and build?

  • What values do I value most?

  • What do I not want in the culture as it grows?

These are SUPER important questions, any stage organization and its leadership should ask itself often!

Below are the values that will guide Bent Creek Advisors. I welcome your thoughts and feedback on these!

  1. Integrity and Excellence: We uphold honesty, transparency, and accountability, while striving for exceptional quality in our deliverables and services, continuously seeking to exceed client expectations.

  2. Collaboration and Empowerment: We foster a culture of teamwork, open communication, and partnership, encouraging team members to take risks, learn from failures, and develop their skills to their fullest potential.

  3. Boldness and Innovation: We push the boundaries of what is possible, embracing challenges to drive creative problem-solving and breakthrough solutions.

  4. Diversity and Inclusion: We value diversity in ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds, and promote an inclusive work environment where everyone can contribute their unique strengths.

  5. Community Engagement and Philanthropy: We actively participate in initiatives that make a positive impact on our local and global communities, while giving back through supporting charitable causes and volunteering.

  6. Work-Life Balance and Sustainability: We prioritize family and personal well-being by creating a flexible, family-friendly work environment, and pursue environmentally responsible practices for the well-being of our environment and communities.

Additionally as the team builds its important to know what "kind" of team you want to build with the values above. Those that know me, know I love the "Ocean 11" team analogy. Here are the principles of building team that will also guide decisions and what the teams look like that deliver value to our clients along the way!

  1. BUILD AN OCEAN 11 TEAM: It starts with the team. Build an amazing team. One that has a variety of thoughts / ideas, skill sets, and is not afraid to rub against each other a bit (aka disagree) to drive forward with great product. BTW small teams can accomplish the same or more as monolithic teams bogged down by bureaucracy. ;)

  2. GIVE CREATIVE AUTHORITY: Make it clear to that team, they have creative authority.

  3. DO NOT EXPECT PERFECTION OUT OF THE GATE: Make it known that perfect should never get in the way of good at first. Try something, see if it sticks, then try again

  4. FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER: Ensure all are laser focused on the customer. Lets face it, "why build product if you have no idea who your customer is?". Healthcare organizations I am looking dead at you. KNOW your customer. Fund "PRODUCT TEAMS" NOT " project teams". Their is a difference!!

  5. GIVE CLEARANCE TO THE TEAM: Clear the runway for that team to work and innovate. If they are bogged down with "meeting-itis" ... or competing organization priorities, you might as well just give up now. It WONT work.

  6. NEVER MICROMANAGE - It is literally insane to hire an smart ocean 11 team and then mirco-manage the heck out of them! DO NOT DO THIS!

  7. CHALLENGE YOUR VIEWS AND ASSUMPTIONS: Constantly challenge YOUR own assumptions on the product, product fit, customer, etc... RETHINK things constantly. Never get so enamored with what you have built you are not willing to listen and pivot.

  8. GET CLOSE TO THE ACTION: Never sit on the sidelines. You need to get your butt close to the action, as close as you can. Understand the problem and customer. Encourage your product team to do the same!

  9. MAKE IT OKAY FOR THE TEAM TO CLASH: Healthy disagreement is good. If you team IS NOT having it ask yourself why. Face it, nothing changes unless people are willing to challenge the status quo. Encourage this in respectful manors!

  10. ITS YOUR JOB TO CONTINUALLY RALLY THE TEAM: Focus on energizing them, having fun, and finding ways to connect them through the challenging times. Always refocus them back to the core problem and customer. You cannot go wrong!

I hope this helps you in your decision framework and how you build your own Ocean 11 team and amazing organization!

Best,

Brian Norris
